I’m working on Jamie and Greg’s wedding and came across this photograph that we made at sunset with her dad’s 1955 Ford Thunderbird in front of the Aldrich Mansion. The wedding will be posted on the blog Wednesday, but thought Jamie and Greg (and Joe) would want to see this.

Wow, times flies. It was almost a year ago that I met Lenny and Diane for their Providence engagement shoot on a scorching hot day in early July. It’s been a pleasure to get to know both of them over the past year and their wedding day was done their way and came out perfect! I remember when talking with them that they really wanted their wedding reception to be a big party without the traditional stuff because they really wanted people to have fun and dance. Let’s just say that I saw Lenny and Diane on the dance floor more than anyone else. Thanks so much for having me as your photographer on such a special day in your life.

When I saw the location for portraits and the tower dominating the hilltop I knew I had to make at least one vertical panoramic image.

Sometimes the best stories are right at home. My son Zak wanted to make some money sining on the street so he could by Diesel some more puppy toys sop his mom set him up at the head of the driveway. My wife heather texted me to come out and see what was going on. I peeked out the window and grabbed my camera and shot a couple of frames. These are the types of moments that I am constantly telling my clients about. The unexpected little nuggets from everyday life.

What a great day for Ryan and Ashlie! It rained like crazy all the way down to Newport and then as we arrived the weather cleared. We started off the day at Oceancliff at the Gate House with Ashlie surrounded by friends and family and Ryan up in the main building with his family and buds being photographed by the lovely Allana Taranto.  The late afternoon ceremony at Salve Regina in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel which is a gorgeous modern Catholic Church really allowed family and friends to enjoy the love and joy. After the ceremony a few formal photographs were taken on the lawn in front of the ocean and then the entire wedding party was off to Oceancliff for a great night of celebrating. One of the most touching and funniest moments of the night came when Ryan’s grandfather who was also his best man gave the toast. He had some great one-liners and you can really see what he means to Ryan and Ashlie. 2012 is starting out to be a great wedding season. How can you not be psyched up when there is a Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream bar brought in and manned by B&J employees.

Wow! Did we get lucky or what with gorgeous fifty degree weather when photographing Josh and Katie this January down in Newport. We had a great afternoon gallivanting from place to place all around the Newport area. We hit the beach, downtown, Cliff walk, Ocean Drive, Newport Country Club, Castle Hill and a couple little hidden spots I’ve found over the years. These two could not be a better couple and with Bear their black lab they already have an active life as Bear definitely loved to run and play. I wish you lived a little closer it would have been a blast to shoot your wedding! Have fun back him in Traverse City, MI with your family and friends at your wedding this summer!

I always like to look for different angles on the wedding day. Megan and Scott had planned an outdoor ceremony, but were driven into the barn at the Landis Valley Farm Museum by the rain. It was a Quaker ceremony where they married themselves and Frank the bride’s dad took a spot up leaning against the post to watch his youngest daughter get married. I love getting the perspective of what he’s seeing on his daughter’s wedding day and with the beams framing the image it’s one of the off beat favorites of the year for me. I tend to like the quiet introspective moments of the day that sometime get overlooked.

It was a year from the time I shot Kate and Brian’s engagement in October 2010 at Borderland State Park to their wedding in 2011 and it was a great experience getting to know them over that time. I met their daughter when she came in for their first consult and she is a little ham and she stole the show at the reception dancing the night away!

The wedding day was almost a mirror day of the we shot the engagement session and it was a gorgeous day. I think everyone expects picture perfect days in October and they got those days two years in a row! It was one of those perfect Massachusetts fall days that’s just overcast enough to enhance the foliage and make everything even more colorful.

Meg and I started our day of covering the bride and groom getting ready with their friends and family. The wedding ceremony took place in Pilgrim Church in Duxbury and was as a New England a church as you could hope for. What really topped of the day was the reception at Jones River Trading in Kingston, Massachusetts. That place is over the top in its uniqueness. There are lots of great spaces to shoot and explore. It’s just a great place to host an event like a wedding reception.

The scene made for a great backdrop for the  love that is shared between them and their family and friends.  One of my favorite moments in my 2011 wedding season was when Kate’s dad gave one of the best speeches I’ve heard a parent make welcoming a son or daughter into their family. It really set the tone for a great evening. I know there were many people sniffing and holding back tears.

The band rocked the house and everyone was out shaking their tails until the very last song of the night. It was one of those nights where you lose track of time.

Cyprian Keyes was the location of the wonderful wedding of Beth and Esteban. Beth was a picture of composure and smiled through the whole process of makeup and getting into her dress while enjoying the time with everyone that surrounded her and that smile was there every second throughout the day and Esteban is a special guy and you could really see the love he had for his family and friends in every photograph I took. I would just like to thank Beth and Esteban for allowing me to be part of their big day. You were both a ton of fun to be around and you really enjoyed the day with your family and friends. It really showed in your smiles and graciousness with everyone there.

As a wedding and lifestyle photographer who shoots a ton of weddings in Boston I always like the change of pace when shooting engagement sessions in Boston proper. I love the uniqueness of the historic Boston morphing into what has become a beautiful modern city where people have not forgotten their heritage. Jamie and Greg and I shot in some great locations that ranged from a cobble stone street that was probably a cow path to a newly renovated T station. Where else in this country can you shoot a profession of 350 years in one mile?

These two were troopers and I just want to thank them for their patience as we probably walked 5 miles from the State House,  Charles Street, Boston Public Gardens and ending up at the Arlington T stop.

What a day Catherine and Darby had for their wedding at the Conanicut Yacht Club. Perfect early fall weather and and a bunch of family and friends to be part of a great celebration. I had such a crazy time when putting together this blog post that it grew into a Part One for today and Part Two coming tomorrow night. Usually I blog 20-35 images from a wedding, but I got a little carried away and realized I needed to split the wedding blog posts in half. Leah and Steven contacted me a couple of months ago about photographing their wedding at Migis Lodge up in Maine. I’m always excited to go home to photograph a wedding and when leah sent me a e-mail saying that my blog post on Camp in Maine really touched her and it was how she felt about her cabin up there and all the connections to family that made my week.

When they told me about their plans for their engagement session they added my second favorite “M” word behind Maine which is MOVIES my mind started racing in 100 directions of how to shoot them in the theatre.  They had the Somerville Theatre for a couple of hours one afternoon and between the theatre and the funky Museum of Bad Art in the basement we had a blast! Mt favorites of the day are them hanging out in the seats and shot as if they were just hanging out and munching on popcorn while watching a great new fall movie.

Leah and Steven really know how to have fun and relax and it was two hours of cracking up and before I knew it we had run out of time! Have fun and enjoy this time leading up to next summer!

What a great night we picked for Ashlie and Ryan’s engagement session. It was late September and we had some early fall weather which just a little chilly, but with great early evening light. I had never been to Salem Willows and I’m glad that I had the opportunity to shoot there as it’s such a hidden gen. If you’re in Salem you should make it a point to visit during the summer months. It was pretty much closed down for the winter, but it really gave us just tons of unique and fun places to shoot where we wound up being the only people around.

What a gorgeous day Kelly and Andrew wound up having for their wedding day. It was a blue sky and puffy clouds kind of day, but it was typical July and 95 degrees. At the end of the day, I think I drank 10 Gatorades because I was running around so much.  Kelly and Andrew and their family and friends were an absolute blast to be around and photograph.

The day started out with me photographing Kelly getting ready and the awesome Rich Pizzuti hanging out with the guys at the Providence Westin. From there, we took a trolley over to the Central Congregational Church of Providence which is stunning. Then the day day took us to the State House for some formals and portraits. The day ended with a rocking reception at the Westin.

Yesterday was a big day for the Higgins family. Zak is going into Kindergarten at Martin Elementary School and it was the first day of school and his first bus ride to school! He was a little nervous.  It really helped that he’s in the PM class so there were only three kids to be picked up at our stop and the other two kids are the twins down the street that he’s buddies with. The worst part of the day was that morning.  There was a lot of anticipation and he was a little amped up to get going. We’re now on day two and it was just as much fun for him. I wonder how much fun it will be on day 122 when it’s cold, snowy and dark out when we go to the bus?

To keep up with the body count we now have two in high school, two in middle school and Zak in elementary school. It’s a crazy house with the oldest driving the car and the youngest driving us crazy.

I just want to send a quick thanks out to Kenny and Kelly for the privilege of photographing their wedding this past Friday at the Sturbridge Host. Your families were wonderful and the kids really made it a lively evening! We have five kids so seeing 13 little ones running around was a fun thing to watch and photograph!

Just a sneak peek at a few photographs from Danielle and Todd’s wedding day. What a fun couple, and their crew really knew how to party it up and enjoy the day. I will say that this is the first time I’ve had someone run off in the middle of Boston Common during formals for a pretzel (I’m calling you out Todd). The setting at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge was gorgeous, but what made the day was how great the two of your are together. Thanks to Jaime Connolly Parker (who was kind enough to 2nd with me for the day and hung with the guys) and got the great shots of Todd and the guys!

I really love this photograph. It’s s simple little shot made at the end of my nephew JJ’s party. The cousins (Zak my son is the short one). It’s these type of photographs that get my mind going a million miles an hour. It’s like the little snow ball at the top of the mountain that once it gets rolling turns into an avalanche (of thoughts). I have a thought in my head of them in this same “guy” pose at their graduations from high school, college and when they get married. What will the look like? What will their lives be like? What moments in their lives will have lead them to the moment where I capture them with arms around each other? Will they be as close as they are now?

I have some photographs like this with my cousin Donnie and we are still that close after 42 years and I remember many pictures in old albums with us with fish in one hand and arms over each other shoulders. My most memorable thought associated with a picture is when my mom and aunt went and got us monster t-shirts and we all posed on the back deck of their house on Crystal Lake in CT. We all went into our monster poses and looked ridiculous, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Just looking at that photograph brings back a million memories.

This is why I shoot weddings. I love being their one day one of a new life. Two individuals starting a family and I’m fortunate enough to have been invites in on that day to document it and to start creating photographs that mean as much to them as the shot of my son and nephew in the above image.

My favorite images from weddings are always the subtle moments or the off hand portraits. I wonder what the toddler brother and sister dancing will look like 20 years down the road. Will the little boy and girl be close siblings? Will one be on the West Coast in college and the other in the military overseas? Will they talk everyday?

It’s these type of crazy thoughts that keep me charged and motivated on a ten hour wedding day. My feet may hurt at 11 PM, but I sure as hell don’t want to miss the shot of the day which could be on frame one or frame three thousand and one.

This Providence engagement session became a reality when I met Lenny and Diane when they came to Providence from Hartford for a consult. They are an awesome couple and we hit it off as soon as we met. They were a little nervous about the engagement shoot, but within 10 minutes of arriving on Benefit Street they were relaxed and having fun. I love the areas around Brown and Benefit Street and we found some great places to photograph. I really love finding little out of the way places that people miss when I’m in an area like this. We found some brick walls, stoops, a small hedge garden, a cute little alley way between two colonial era homes. This place was a gold mine in finding unique areas with good light.

We ended the day with a stop by Capron Park in Attleboro on the way back to my studio. It’s the first time I’ve photographed a couple there, but it won’t be the last. The area around the gardens was absolutely gorgeous and they have some great places to shoot around some large Oak trees. If you have kids you’ll love the Capron Park Zoo. It’s a small community zoo with about 100 or so different animals and will take maybe an hour to see. I was really impressed with the park and the shooting opportunities as a photographer.

It was a great Monday with the two of you in Providence and I am already looking forward to next April. Have fun over the next fw months leading up to the wedding!

Lea and Mark are a great couple and really easy going which made the engagement session fly by as we were having so much fun. We started the session off down on the Scituate waterfront near the lighthouse and we finished our day by the cottage of mark’s grand dad. There wedding is coming right up on September 3rd and I know it’s going to b a great day because these two have the right frame of mind and will have fun whether it’s 50 and raining or 100 degrees and sticky. A sneak peek at the wonderful wedding on Brian and Oriana at Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum. They definitely take the prize with family who traveled with family from India, Montana (the one place I want to go ore than anywhere else) and California joining them to celebrate their wedding. I think it says everything about a couple when people literally come from all ends of the earth to be with them on their special day.

I know from talking with Oriana that family in INdia are anxiously awaiting some photographs and I hope these give you a glimpse into their wedding day.

I just read an article where they state that Every Mainer has a camp. That statement is pretty true in the woods in Northern Maine where I grew up. For me camp has been two places. Pushaw Lake from the time I could remember until Gamp passed away and Sebec Lae which my parents got in 1999.

Growing up camp was a one room log cabin with an old fashioned slate sink with a well hand pump and no running water. That magical place in my memory was owned by my Gramp and Gram Mac. It’s a place where my parents would bring me every summer from my first swim in the cove in April where there would still be floating ice until their were trees with no leaves scratching a gray sky. Yes, I really did swim that early. I always had to be the fist one in the lake in our family and I still maintain that tradition today beating all my own kids into Sebec lake every spring.

I can remember my Aunt Glenda and Aunt Karrie bringing all 5 cousins up every summer and we would run wild for the week in the Old Town lap-streak with the 10 H.P outboard going from one end of the lake to the other while we explored islands and looked for the elusive 3 foot pickerel or five pound bass. I can remember my Gramp sitting in the front of the boat being driven all over the lake by his grandsons.

It’s a place where we went to pick raspberries with our dads and I still remember my dad coming back to the cabin as white as a sheet after he had woken a sleeping black bear up from his nap in the berry patch.

It’s the place where my cousin Donnie would bring chewing tobacco and we would all try it thinking we were being so cool until my cousin David decided to try it while we were in the boat when he swallowed the chew and turned green. I mean he really turned green he was so sick.

Camp is where my Gramp taught my to drive his truck and where we would take a ride to Tates to pick strawberries.

It’s a place where my dad taught me to sail.

It’s the place where Gram rallied around her family on July 4th weekend in 1982 before she passed away in August of lung cancer. I stayed with my Gram and Gramp after everyone left and had a long talk with my Gramp as a 13 year old kid who tried to act like a brave man for a scared man who was about to lose his wife.

It’s the place where we scattered Gramp’s ashes in 2007 among four generations of his family.

As an adult my parents built a log cabin on Sebec Lake which is 10 miles outside of my hometown of Dover-Foxcroft Maine. Dad bought the land in 1999 and we have have been out there for as long as my own children have memories.

Camp is more refined and the cabin is a true 21st century home with all the amenities you would expect minus one. No internet (which I love). BUT. It’s still camp for my children. It’s Pop’s Lake and Mimi’s cabin to our kids.

Camp is Maine to my kids. It’s a family tradition and is important part of our family’s sanity and quality of life.

Camp is where the kids catch bass on the docks and where a 3 year old thinks he’s hot stuff in his rubber boat.

It’s a place where we build fires with Pop and have S’mores every night.

Where our sons swim until their skin is wrinkled like a prune. Where my oldest learned to water-ski last summer. A place where he’ll learn to drive an ATV this summer. It’s getting up at 4:30 AM to drive to the Forks to go white water rafting on the Penobscot River.

It’s the place where I take them tubing and they tell me one ride is scarier than any roller coaster they’e been on. A place where my daughter picks wild flowers with my wife. Where we still pick raspberries with my dad for mom’s famous raspberry  pies.

Camp is laying in bed at night with my wife and listening to the rain on the roof of the loons crying to one another. It’s lounging in an Adirondack chair by the water watching the kids swim and sitting up late playing yahtzee, pinochle or cribbage. It’s Pop telling the kids that there is a big moose out on the road and everyone piling in the truck to go see it with him.

Camp is a where the kids all want to be woken up on a Friday night drive from Massachusetts as we arrive on the dirt road at midnight because they know they will see a fox, moose, bear, deer, etc walking the road that late night. Camp is magical t the kids. (Mac thought the suit would allow him to fly and Zak had watched Harry Potter and thought magic was real)

Camp is putting 100 worms on a hook so the kids can catch sunfish in a bucket. It’s where I caught a snapping turtle with a Barbie fishing pole that had a small sunfish on it while the kids screamed that I had a dinosaur on the line. It’s where Ryan is in his element with a pole in hand.

Camp is my mom’s baked beans on Saturday night followed by my brother-in-law’s camp breakfast on Sunday morning. It’s where we have continued a 27 year tradition of gathering all the fathers for a Father’s Day lobster and steamers feed.

For me, camp is taking my camera down to the water and capturing that same vista for the 100th time as the sun sets because it never gets old to me. It’s breaking out and being a little silly.

Camp is where I read that stack of non-photography books and magazines I’ve been saving. It’s the family trip into Butterfields to get homemade ice cream on a big waffle cone.

Camp is a new generation of cousins.

Camp is no cell phone, internet, computer, and the only television is to watch the Sox. It’s fun watching my teenagers stand on one leg while they hop up and down thinking that they will get one bar on Edge (No 3G) on their iPhone. It’s where we watch them grow up.

Mr. Zak has had a couple of big months turning 5 and graduating from middle school! He’s a little Imp and we all love him to death. He’s a trooper trying to keep up with all his big brothers and sister. Next year we will have kids in elementary, middle and high school.

As a wedding photographer in Boston who works in many large ballrooms and outdoor locations I’m always looking for geometric shapes and layers to help make my photographs more interesting.

I’ve been going through some of my favorite photographs from the weddings I’ve photographed. I love this image for several reasons. It tells the story of a wonderful couple and it’s evident from the smiles and looks of love they have in their faces. From a purely technical standpoint I love the way the Hopa and umbrella handles make this a very geometric image by giving us four quadrants from left to right.

Images in Geometric Photography can range from mimialist to complex constructed images and by the framing of objects within a composition which may not be specifically geometric shapes but by the way they are photographed appear to be geometric.

As a photographer we have a number of ways in which they can gain control over their composition. Photographers have the advantage of choosing lenses and their format, predominately rectangular or square. We can also choose B&W or Color, and have varying ways of controlling their contrast and saturation, in order to invoke a mood.

We also have the use of vantage point and angles in order to direct the viewer’s eye. Diagonal lines are considered stronger than vertical or horizontal lines. Angles can give you more dynamic lines. The wider the angle of the lens, the more exaggerated is the effect on the image.

Brian Smith of Madison Editions is a local fine art printer and for several years has been providing some gorgeous fine art printing from his company which bout 3 miles from my house. He’s starting a new venture Boston Gallery Wrap doing gallery wraps in his studio and hand mounting them. Brian is providing the absolute best materials that are out there and is taking the time to hand stretch them and letting them cure which is something that sets him apart from all the other people out there offering wraps to consumers and wedding/event/lifestyle photographers.

I’ve had this wrap up in my home studio the past 4 months and it’s absolutely beautiful. Unlike some gallery wraps that sag after a few months this one is tight and looks as good as the day I picked it up. For the 2011 wedding season he’ll be the only person providing wraps and prints to my couples.

Belle Mer in Newport Rhode Island is like a blank canvas for each new couple. It’s a very popular venue in Newport, RI and pulls couples in from all over New England. When I was going through my archives as I update my galleries on my website I came across this dancing photograph from a wedding this past summer at Belle Mer in Newport, Rhode Island and I just fell in love with this image.

I had already shot the safe first dance photos and decided to shoot some with no flash at a high ISO. I know they could be a little grainy and even some slight blur, but I wanted to get something a little different. I love it because you can sense the emotion and the slight blur ads time to the photograph in the terms os a slight motion blur.

I love the first dance because it’s a time when the bride and groom are alone for what might be the only time that day since being married. It’s a part of the day where I personally make sure I move from my A game to my A+ game.

On the last snow day North Attleboro had I made sure to get out my camera and document my own kids. It’s always the cobblers kids having no shoes, same thing for photographers not having enough photographs of their own children. I take a documentary approach to lifestyle photography. I love the one of Ryan and Zak coming out of the tunnel. Their mom was asking them what the heck they were doing and they were sticking their tongues out to goad her on.

I encourage all photographers to get their cameras out and to make sure we don’t miss the days that count. I still love photography as a hobby so it’s not hard for me to break a camera out to just have some fun.

I’m not a big fan of taking a “day” to show our love to another person. I think it’s something that needs to be done every day, not just February 14th. I don’t show much of my personal work on my blog, but today is an exception. As a wedding photographer in Boston I like showing uplifting pictures and the pictures above tell the story of lost love, so take some time every day to let the important people in your life know what they mean to you.

These two photographs were made on the day after Valentine’s Day in 2007. Milton “AKA” Memo lived in the 9th Ward his entire life. After the hurricane he really had no where to go so he volunteered with Common Ground in the Lower 9th Ward and was living at a house the volunteers had gotten to habitable conditions. I sat down and talked with Memo that afternoon and he was very open to being interviewed and having a few photographs taken. He talked about how the girl he loved had moved to Missouri and that her father did not like him and did not want her to move back to New Orleans. Memo had just started to date her, but had been in love with her for quite some time. He was heart broken and read the letter he had written to her asking her to go out with him again. If you look near the lower thumb you can read the passage where he compares their love to “Beauty and the Beast.” Memo was a true gentleman and as a photographer we sometimes need to just slow down and listen to people. We talked for 3 hours and I counted the photographs I took. 10.

This was a three plus year project on post Katrina New Orleans. It was a project of love as two of our children still live in New Orleans and I wanted to develop a photo essay over a period of years so they could see as adults how Katrina affected their childhood and community. It was a self funded project with me staying a extra few days each visit. There were days I’d sit down and cry and there was even a point where on one trip I just drove 2 hours over to New Iberia and Lake Martin to shoot wildlife with my friend Brian Champagne because I reached a breaking point. I guess every project at one time kicks us down if it really means something to us. I started this in 2005 and completed the project in early 2009. It was 3 plus years of love, sweat, tears, hate and joy all wrapped up in one.

These two photographs taken at a wedding at the Boston Harbor Hotel really caused me to stop and think. As a dad to a precocious teenager who’s finding her own way in life I often wonder we’re she’ll be 15 years down the road. When I go to a wedding I can picture myself dancing with her and having all the emotions of letting my little girl move on to start a new family with a wonderful guy. The parent dances are some of my favorite moments of the wedding day. It’s a time where a bride/groom gets a chance to have a private talk with their mom/dad out on the dance floor way from all the commotion of the day. Some people get choked up with emotion, some grin joyously like the dad in the picture above, and some laugh hilariously and joke with one another. I can only imagine what they are saying. It’s a moment when real emotion and truth comes through and these small milliseconds of time make a photograph. These are the pictures I love. I see a big trend in wedding photography with tons of details and “stuff” and I think we have lost track of what’s important as photographers. I understand shooting some small details to set the stage of “where” but it’s gone well beyond that on blogs and in bridal magazines.

I can promise all my couples that I’ll gladly miss photographing a center piece if it means capturing a couple of small moments like what I’ve photographed above. I got into wedding photography because people and their stories interest me and that’s my focus on your day. I want to tell your story simply and honestly. I want you to see things that you would have missed because of my photographs. I want you to sit down and look at an album or a stack of prints and remember your day with your family and friends because these occasions can be counted on our fingers during our lifetime.

This photography was made at a New Hampshire backyard wedding where I’m out shooting with my friend Boston Rob. I was shooting all the dancing shots that you see at every wedding and after an hour of shooting like this I started to look for little moments to fill in the time at the reception. As I watched this woman I could see a mix of emotions. She was happy to see her family and friends on the dance floor, but there was also a little sadness and just that small amount of intrigue into what her thoughts were at that moment make this a photograph that I just keep returning to. Is she reminiscing about her youth or lost loved ones? I’ll never know and that’s what makes the story.

Kate and Brian had a gorgeous day for their engagement Session at Borderland State Park and the Wrentham State Forest at the end of October. We made it just in time to catch the foliage before all the laves blew off during the next week. You can see their love and even though they were a little nervous about having their pictures taken (completely normal) they really trusted me and were game to try about anything as we traipsed along the trails. Thanks guys! You made it a fun day!

I guess I’m geeky. I love election days and the fact that even as we Americans most vehemently disagree on issues we settle our differences at the polls and that is what makes as such a remarkable nation. I have been working on an on-going project for 6 years and I anticipate it being another six before I might be ready to call it completed. I take my camera to my local polling place at North Attleboro High School during each election and I like to capture a little of what is going on every election cycle.

Borderland State Park and the Wrentham State Forest was the setting for this engagements portraits above. Here’s a quick sneak peek from this past weekend with Kate and Brian down here on the South Shore. The locations were beautiful and even though it was a cold fall morning where you could see your breath in the air we couldn’t have asked for a better time. The couple were real troopers and got into the shoot.

Just a few that caught my eye while editing the lovely wedding of Jess and Brian that took place at the Brookside Club in Bourne on September 4th. It was a great day and these two really knew how to enjoy their day and all their family and friends. There will be a slide show up early next week with a ton of photos! I had the privilege of shooting the e-session of Andrea and Trevor on Columbus Day weekend. Trevor flew into town for the long weekend from Chicago to visit Andrea at BC as she’s here for the next year in a post-grad program. They wanted something with the feeling of Boston as they are getting married next summer in Mankato, Minnesota and it was important for them to document their time in the city. We started at the ICA and then wandered through the Boston Public Gardens before ending on Marlborough Street in the Back Bay. We could not have asked for a better day and things were moving along so fast that we lost track of time and what turned into a 2.5 hour session wound up being 4 hours! When you lose track of time you know you’re having a good time.

The Newport Navy Officer Club hosted Kelly and Tim’s wedding reception. The O’club is on the base and has a beautiful view of Newport and the bridge. It is probably one of the more picturesque places to shoot at if you want the Newport Bridge in any of your photographs. Here’s a quick shot of the bride with the new hubby and brother enjoying one of the many fun moments of the night. There will be more to come.

It was a beautiful day and the couple to a walk along the ocean during the reception and there are some killer shots from that small couple portrait time.

Ocean Edge Resort was the location for this early fall wedding in Brewster, Massachusetts. Here are a couple of shots from the beach. The entire bridal party went down there between the ceremony and the reception and we had some time to make some really cool portraits. It was one of those cool fall days that are windy with bald skies. It made photographing at 2 PM on the beach a little challenging, but we managed to get some great shots. I’d like to thank the resort staff for hauling us around on the bus and down to the beach.

It was a happy and sad day for Zak today and I have to admit that it was hard to see him head off to pre-school at The North Attleboro YMCA. My little man has been my co-pilot the past year as I worked on my business and played daddy day care. He’s been my right hand man and he loves cameras and photography and wants to grow up to be like his daddy. I’ll miss our little daily routines and photo adventures.

Z’s the baby and the final one of our five kids to head of to school so it was a big day.

The Brookside Club in Bourne Massachusetts gets a new wedding look. This is what happens as a reception winds down and you have two photographers that love to play with light and toys? They break out a carbon fibre tripod with RRS BH-55 ball I have in the car for landscaping shooting, mount the D3 and start playing with their SB-900 Speedlights and do light paintings in the pitch black night. This photo was a collaboration with Doug Levy who knows lighting inside and out and is a fantastic shooter. Doug’s the “invisible” man painting the heart.

Beth and Chris had a rocking reception where everyone was all smiles from beginning to end. The reception was held at The Ledgemont Country Club and the setting could not have been better. We started with formals before anyone was there and I loved the time we had to hang out with the families and close friends. The dance floor was constantly filled and this crew really knew how to have a great time.

Beth and Chris are a great couple who really knew how to enjoy themselves with smiles on their faces throughout the day as they celebrated with family and friends.

The ceremony was held at St. Mary’s in Shrewsbury where Beth grew up. She spent the morning getting ready at her childhood home and it was special to see where she came from since she was starting a new journey that afternoon. Chris is one of the most outgoing and personable guys I’ve met. My favorite shot of him is the first one of he and Beth after he exits the church. You can see him visibly exhaling. All of his buddies gave him a little ribbing because you don’t often see Chris “off his game”.

Jess and Brian are one of the most easy going couples I’ve had the pleasure to photograph. They are living near downtown Dedham right now and when I asked them where they wanted to do their engagement session they wanted to simply shoot around their home. I love these types of sessions and it really shows the couple in a relaxed natural way.

This image was made last month on a visit to Maine to visit family and friends. Lola is a precocious little girl so I loved capturing her running off the dock, but also taking a minute to herself on the rocks next to the dock. I have really enjoyed family lifestyle work and have found that it really fits into how I want to shoot as a photojournalist. I also love the complications of light outside and using on location lighting to enhance the available light.

Sandra and Chris picked a wonderful day to celebrate their wedding. The chose Old Sturbridge Village and the setting was unique and inviting. When Sandra was getting ready she mentioned that she has a hard time getting Chris out on the dance floor and that she was excited because today he’s HAVE to dance with her. I try to be on my toes the entire wedding day, but I knew that theses pictures would be one of the special moments that Sandra would like to look back and remember.

This is one of my favorite B&W images from 2009. I l pride myself on being a photojournalist during the day and capturing the moments as they unfold because for me, it’s all part of telling a wedding story. Here’s the backstory for this photo.

The bride is running late and Chris has been left alone in the Sacristy by his best man while he went to check on the limo and it’s whereabouts. There was joking and small talk to kill the nerves, but once Chris was alone he became still and held his hands together almost like he was in prayer. He had the 1000 yard stare and realized the magnitude of the day. When Chris saw this photo in their gallery he just laughed and said “Man, I was really worried that she realized she could do better!”

On the second day of Inspire Boston we all wearily trudged into our first session of the day at 9 AM. Blam, Eric Laurits hits us right up the head with an inspiring video that made me think about my entire vision as a wedding photographer (He has the video on his FB page).

Then the second BLAM. A slide with seven questions that make us question who we are. I don’t mean who we are as a wedding photographers. I MEAN who we are as a human being.

1. How would you define personal vision?
2. How do you articulate personal vision?
3. Where does personal vision come from? Is it ingrained or acquired?
4. How do you go about taking personal vision and putting it into practice?
5. How has your personal vision changed over your lifetime?
6. Have you ever compromised your personal vision?
7. Have you ever questioned the authenticity of your personal vision?

I mean! WOW! Those are questions that rock us to our core. I had scribbled down my answers and then took some time this weekend to reflect and write out my answers in a quite place. It was a gut wrenching experience and I looked at it from the angle of being several things in one person. I’m not just a wedding photographer, I’m a husband, dad, son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and I needed to write out my statement so it incorporated all these facets. I also wanted to be real and attainable. I didn’t want it to sound like some corporate bullshit mission/vision statement. I won’t share it here, but if you’re an interested friend I’d be glad to e-mail it to you so I can have someone keep me on the path if I get off track. I sent Eric my personal vision today and I know he’ll hold me accountable if I get off the path.

How do you top of a unique event like Inspire Boston? The Jug Band! These fellas and ladies have been playing every Wednesday night at the Colonial Inn for the last 30 years. After the pizza party at LensProToGo about 20 people were left and evryone migrated back to the Colonial Inn for a last couple of hours of socializing. You had 30 wedding photographers whipping out everything from their cameras to mobile phones. One time when I Looked back there were literally 5 cameras and 10 phones up and at the go. The clarinetist is the a member of the White Heat Swing Orchestra and they played a wedding I shot last spring and were a blast to listen and watch. Nothing like everyone in the band in white dinner jackets to bring a little classic class back to a wedding reception.

These were all shot using a D700 at ISO 6400. Not the prettiest pictures in the world, but when you need the shot even in the worst light they deliver! As a photojournalistic wedding photographer I’m looking to capture small moments and nights like this are great practice for weddings and more importantly, they’re a lot of fun!

At Inspire Boston we had wonderful Robert Norman do a series of interview for his PHODCAST series that interviews wedding photographers. I believe he conducted 11 interviews and I had the unenviable job of following up Jim Collins, the CEO of Pictage. It was interesting to say the least. Let’s just say that technical difficulties required a second take, but the first take would have worthy of any highlight reel. I agree with Jim that it was probably divine intervention that the first one was unable to be recorded! You can only imagine the jokes about the “large white balls” of the microphones he was using.

There was quite the cast of characters coming in and out of the room and Robert kept his interviews on track and blocked all of us out as we socialized and chatted. A real professional at work.

Robert I’d love to do something more in-depth with you sometime. I Know everyone I spoke with felt the same way.

Meet Lola. She was OK with the first ten minutes of being photographed for an impromptu family photography session, but after that she hid behind her hat. The shot with the hat and missing teeth were my favorite. She had lost her teeth the month previous in a sliding accident when went down a hill and fell and knocked them out. I think she could be playing ice hockey from the Maine Black Bears in a few years.

Providence wedding photographer gets shot my very own paparazzo at this wedding reception in Providence, RI. This little guy was the hit of the reception. He acted as photographer, break dancer, stole a kiss from the bride, he did it all! I look for images like this during a reception because the bride and groom are so busy visiting guests and with all the commotion these type of moments are some of the best and they might have missed them half a room away.

This is the brood. I made the decision this year to make the blog a little more personal so I thought I’d introduce the kiddos today. Taylor is 14, Molly is 11, Ryan is 11, Mac is 10 and Zak is 3. The grades range from high school to elementary school with the little guy still at home.

Sometimes is all the craziness of their activities it seems endless, but then I look at the bottom two photographs. The one one the left was taken in July of 2005 and the one on the right this past July. Besides the remarkable changes they are multiplying! Zak makes his appearance!

Make sure you appreciate every minute that the kids are home. It’s hard to believe in three years our oldest will be headed out to college. I think his room will make an excellent jacuzzi room. Kidding everyone!

I wanted to do something to force myself out of my comfort zone and research shows that people that have goals written out accomplish significantly more. The one thing I have promised myself is that I will do more personal projects such as my post Katrina work in New Orleans. My B&W portfolio and Katrina Portfolio Website is one of my proudest accomplishments as a photographer. The images above are from another mino-portfolio of 12 portraits. So, why post this work when I’m talking about a 101 list? Well, when I did this project I had written goals and it’s one of the reasons why it was so personally successful for me.

It was a gorgeous day at Belle Mer. I love sunbursts and when shooting in the afternoon you get plenty of them in mid-summer on the water. I purposely removed my lens hood so I could get this effect when shooting straight into the sun. Most people boost the colors, but as a B&W lover I decided to process it in this manner and love it. I always set aside a few images every year and revisit them in the winter and try different processing techniques. I’d love if a couple would tell me “we want the entire album in B&W prints”

Newport RI engagement photography session of Beth and Chris - Beth and Chis are a local couple and during the process of getting to know one another we really hit it off. They have many of the same tastes and are just fun vibrant people to be around. They really love one another and it shows within one minute of spending time with them. The engagement session was shot on Saturday the 18th in December in Newport, RI and we beat out the big Nor’easter by a couple of hours. Newport is a special place for both as Chris loves sailing and Beth is a graduate of Salve Regina. Even though it was cold and windy they smiled through jittering and had a lot of fun while playing around in front of the camera that afternoon.

These photographs were made at the Sakonnet Vineyards in Rhode Island. The officiant was giving instructions to the groom and his groomsmen and I decided to step away and use my wide angle lens to capture the entire scene. I started shooting up close, but I try to shoot every situation from a hundred angles is I have time so I started to back up and saw the scene above open in front of me. I always bring a wide angle lens with me and this is exactly the reason why.

It was a true New England spring day with that early season electric green grass and dandelions that had gone by all over the lawn. It was overcast, but for me that just softened the light and allowed for some beautiful photographs.

This photograph was taken when I was hanging out with the groomsmen for a few minutes before the bride arrived by limo for their ceremony at Saint Teresa’s in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. I got a few group formals with the guys, but wasn’t  getting what I was looking for so I basically told them to just get in a circle with a gap so I could see Chad the groom. I fiddled with my camera so they thought I was changing settings and soon they forgot about me and a couple of the guys lit up cigarettes and they all relaxed and started shooting the shit. This is when I stepped away and onto the sidewalk by Saint Teresa’s. I got a few of these shoots and this one was my favorite of Chad and the guys.

These images were made at a local wedding in Providence, RI. I love dancing at every reception because it really shows the emotion of all the couples who get caught up in the emotion of the wedding day. People really let their guard down and some intimate moments present themselves. I step back and use my long lens so I’m not intrusive and people tend to forget I’m there and that’s when I’m happiest because as a wedding photojournalist I want to be invisible for ninety percent of the day.

This past week New Orleans faced down a hurricane. Luckily it hit way to the West and only as a Tropical Storm. My children, MacDonald and Molly had Monday off from school in case they needed to evacuate and the thought of them brought me back to August of 2005 when they evacuated to Houston. In 2005 I flew down and picked them up and brought them home to Massachusetts. Mac and Molly were lucky to have a place that was safe and known to them as their second “home”. After the kids retuned home I would stay extra days on each trip to pick them up so I could document what happened.

I like people to know me for more than a wedding photographer.

This past Tuesday I had the privilege of presenting to a wonderful group of wedding photographers at the Boston PUG ( Pictage User Group ) on Color Management Workflow at LensProToGo in Concord, MA. I’d like to thank everyone that attended. If you have any questions on setting up Photoshop, preparing prints for a color space, etc just e-mail away. You were a great audience with tons of quality questions! I’m refining the presentation and hoping to have something even more in-depth the next time it’s unveiled.

As a photographer I cannot post to my blog without at least one image. I have been working on a sample B&W matted album as I would like to offer this even though I know it won’t be a big seller. I love Fine Art B&W and hopefully some couples will as well. Maybe even as a second wedding album.

Pawtucket and Providence Wedding of John and Vanessa. The couple had a rainy Saturday wedding this past weekend. The weather may have been a little gloomy, but everyone at the wedding and reception was blowing it out and having a great time. I love it when things may go astray with things like the weather, but no one cares. They just make it a unique part of their day. It was a privilege to shoot their big day and to see the love that they have for one another and their family and friends. The carousel and botanical gardens at Roger Williams Park in Providence were a nice touch for the couple of hours between the ceremony at St. Mary’s in Pawtucket and their reception in North Providence.

It was a cloudy and rainy day for this Interlaken Inn wedding, but the weather created a truly memorable ceremony. The umbrellas added some character and the brooding clouds really intensified the mood of this lakeside ceremony. As someone that grew up on a lake in Maine it really resonated with me as a real New England moment. The clouds even cleared for five minutes and I just chuckled to myself with the old adage of “if you don’t like the weather wait five minutes”

Interlaken Inn Reception for Dave and Monica was a blow out and everyone had a great time! Everyone was dancing and having a great time and the bride and groom were leading the way! Dave’s brother could have been cast in a SNL dancing skit. He was a riot and if you spent two minutes around anyone from either side of the family you had to just laugh out loud. This was the type of wedding that I hope I get every weekend because it never feels like I’m at work when surrounded by wonderful people who love to party and just make life a little more spicy!

The Interlaken Inn is a wonderful place and I hope to shoot there again soon.

The Interlaken Inn was a wonderful location for a very memorable wedding day. Monica was a dream to work with and was an open book the entire day. Her Mom passed away so this was a bitter-sweet day for everyone involved. When Monica’s dad was coming by the room to see her for the first time in her dress she wanted a few minutes alone before her dad saw her and those first few moments together. I stood back and thought that even though these would be great shots, everyone has a limit so I was going to stay in the room and continue to shoot the rest of the bridal party.

Monica asked me to go with her on the back patio and I stood off in the corner trying to be as discreet as possible and these are my favorite hosts of that time. In the first you see Monica with her eyes shut composing herself before her dad walks out and in the second image you can see the happiness and some of the sorrow mixed in one emotion. Thanks you for trusting me Monica and I hope these photographs reveal the true moment.

I loved this wedding and hope I get to shoot again at the Interlaken Inn very soon!

I always believe that you need to take time to experiment. Ninety percent of the time these experiments are failures, but it keeps me fresh and the creative juices flowing. I love miniature photography and have fallen in love with the work of Grace Weston and Matthew Carden so I decided to try a couple of experiments using ring shots with their photography as my inspiration. This is my first experiment using my own wedding band on a picnic table as I watched my little son run around.

I’m as guilty as anyone for doing ring shots on flowers when I’m under the gun to get them done on the wedding day. I look at these little miniatures as props that fit into a pocket and make a ring shot infinitely more interesting.

What can I say? These kids really burned up the dance floor with a 6 minute choreographed dance that lit the place on fire and got the night started on the right foot! I don’t think the Five Bridge Inn had seen anything quite this crazy  in some time and it was on of the highlights of my wedding season so far.

The Five Bridge Inn in Rehobeth, MA was the site of a great wedding of Cailyn and Nick. Itwas a gorgeous day until the ceremony and then storm clouds came in during the ceremony, but luckily it did not rain, but added a little drama to the ceremony. It was a touching ceremony with Nick’s brother acting as the officiant. There were some touching stories and  the ceremony notes were even in the childhood book that was a favorite for Nick.

Cailyn and Nick’s wedding was Saturday the 27th in Rehobeth, Massachusetts at the Five Bridge Inn. It was a location close to home, but unknown to me so it was a real treat to shoot there. The Inn and grounds are beautiful and Cailyn and Nick really took the time to take care of the small details that make each wedding unique.

Krista at Krista Photo was nice enough to have me shoot as her second on June 13th for a wedding in a private home in Marion that was absolutely spectacular. I just sent the DVD to her yesterday and promised no wedding shots, but I thought I’d throw one up showing her hard at work! I was off to the side shooting the bridal party on the pier and the Nikon 200 f2 lens from LensProToGo was a huge advantage over my 70-200VR 2.8.  Be prepared to use a monopod or having your left arm ballon up twice the size of the other form all the weight lifting!

I have been a photographer since following my dad around during the summers on the 70’s as a small boy. Dad was a high-school teacher and during the summer months he would use his time to get out in rural Maine and do everything from landscapes to portraits. That time has always been special to me and what became my initial draw to photography.

In subsequent years things like high-school, college, military duty, full time employment, and then a family turned me into a family photographer taking nothing more than snaps. I didn’t have the time to not only photograph projects, but a darkroom was a daunting task in time management.

In the summer of 2004 everything changed for me. I was in New York visiting on of our ships on Staten Island and on the way home I stopped by B&H Photo thinking I would by a little P&S. They had two D70’s in stock with the 18-70 kit lens and on a whim a plunked down a thousand bucks and walked out wondering if I was crazy. The entire drive back to Boston I kept thinking I should return it, but when I got home and opened up the box and started shooting I knew I had found something special.

I used it a couple of times and then we went on a family vacation and my passion for photography was reignited. The lag and frustration of a P&S were left behind and I felt like I was shooting with my dad’s old Minolta’s and Nikon SLR’s that I grew up with. I finally had the images I wanted without a darkroom.

The image to the above is THE PHOTOGRAPH that opened my eyes.

MacDonald is 5 in this picture. He suffered a stroke at birth and has a condition called hemi-paresis which is a mild form of cerebral palsy. Mac is a kid who works harder than anyone around him to physically keep up, but always has a grin on his face. His older brothers and sister were running ahead to catch bugs in their milk jugs and Mac had to give 100% to just keep at a pace 30 yards behind them. My heart sank and then he looked at me and said “don’t be sad” and gave me a grin and ran even faster to catch up. The image of him running away from me up the hill is my favorite photograph that I have made. It may not be the strongest technically or aesthetically, but it is the closest to my heart.

The little boy running up that hill is my son.

I look at this photograph every single day to find inspiration. It’s the one thing I would like tucked into my coat, when God willing, they bury me 50 years from now.

When we were up in Maine for recently Ryan was sitting on the bench next to the fireplace as the sun was sitting. The light was too good to turn down and this was my favorite shot from our little ten minute session as the late day light poured through the trees.

I read “President Obama’s Father’s Day Article” in Parade Magazine yesterday morning and I have an even greater respect for him. He called on fathers to be accountable and to have the courage to be a part of their children’s life as they are an influence that cannot be replaced and children without fathers struggle with their identity and in many ways question their self worth. The President wants to be “Dad” first and foremost for his children. He came from a background with an absent father and all the challenges it presented and my own father grew up in such the same manner.

My father is someone I look to for guidance and love and he has been the major male figure in my life for as long as I can remember. Dad was at my camp outs, scout meetings, football and hockey games, ceremonies, concerts and everything else. He would say he has two feet so he could stand on one and kick me in the ass with the other. He was right. I was an unmotivated kid and lived in a comfortable middle class family and cared more about girls and sports than “real life”. I remember his long talks and his guidance as I became a young man. If it were not for my Dad I would not be a college graduate.

My Dad grew up with his grand-parents and his mom. The only male figure that I would call a father figure to my Dad would be his Grandfather Stanley. I remember my great-grandfather and even though I was 11 years old when he passed away, I still remember the grief that my father suffered. My great-grandfather was a no-nonsense farmer from rural Maine and you can see his influence on Dad to this day. My father broke the cycle of absent fathers and I am thankful for his life lessons.

Dad took care of his mother in high school and they eked out an existence. He worked to support his family and I cannot imagine the

stressand responsibilities that he faced as a teenager. The only time my Dad saw his father was when he drove through town with his new girlfriend on his side. It was a small community and the kids made fun of him as divorced parents were not common in 1950′s Charleston, Maine. I was embarrassed as a teenager because my dad was picking me up from football practice. I was a “man” and I didn’t need my Dad. He was patient and accepted my crazy teenaged behavior and never belittled me because he knew I foolish I was at the time.

I remember the night in 1982 when he was called that his father died. There was grief and a sense of something that could never be recovered and then he found out later that week that he had been left one dollar in the will so that he could not contest it. His father had moved on and re-married and had children after abandoning my Dad and Grams. It’s the one time I can recall him crying. He was asking my mother how his own father could hate him so much. My grandfather was buried in the Higgins cemetery in Charleston, Maine and he did not have a grave stone. My father was the one who purchased the head-stone because he chose to do the “right” thing. I have never talked with my Dad about that time and I don’t even know if he’s aware that I heard him crying and talking with my mother that one night. I just remember that sometimes you have to do the right thing even under the most dire situations.

When I was at Maine Maritime Academy I got into some trouble and called my Dad. He was angry and upset, but what hurt the most was his disappointment in me. What did my Dad do? He came to school and helped me through my most difficult time in my life. He gave me the proverbial kick in the butt, but he was there and helped ensure that I would graduate. If it had not been for my Dad I would not have fought to stay and graduate from college. I would have been your typical kid floating through life.

Dad graduated from the University of Maine. He went to college on a Blaine House Scholarship which required him to teach in an rural part of Maine. His mother and father did not go to college and when my mom and dad went back for their high-school reunion they were the only couple where both their children had graduated from college. I still remember my sister getting a nurse kit as a little girl, Dad returned it and got her a doctor’s kit and told Leigh that she should strive to be anything she wanted to be. Today my sister is an M.D. and practices medicine in Maine. My Dad was a high-school principal for many years and I know from talking with the kids that he pushed everyone to fulfill their potential.

After graduation I moved to Louisiana for almost ten years. During that time my Dad and I were separated my 2000 miles. We talked on the phone several times a week and visits by my folks were frequent as I could only go to Maine once a year. I remember the day I found out that my son Mac has hemi-paresis like it was yesterday. I called Dad and he had a meeting of several people in his office. He heard my voice crack and cleared his office and spent the afternoon talking me off the ledge of craziness and grief for my little boy. Some parents would not take the call during work, but typical of Dad he did. He had learned the hard life lessons as a boy and young man and was still there for his thirty year old son in his time of need.

I have watched my Dad for 40 years now and his lessons have made me a better Dad in my own right. In 2006 we made a family decision for me to leave the corporate world and these past three years have enabled me to become the Dad I have always wanted to become. I am a teacher and photographer. I used to work in the maritime industry where I would travel all the time. Now the only time I travel is for family vacations. I am daddy-daycare in the summer for five children 14 to 3 and I cannot think of a better job.

My oldest son plays on a travel team for soccer and this year it was literally a part-time job. It was easily 25 hours a week with travel back and forth to Boston. When people ask me how I can do these crazy things for my children I think back to 5 AM practices at the Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. My dad would wake me up at 3 AM and drive me down there because that was the only time we could afford ice time as a team before our season started. I think back to those times and tell people that I am doing no more than my dad did for me. He still has two feet and if I didn’t measure up as a Dad he’d still plant one directly in my butt.

As a wedding photographer I get to see a myriad of different weddings every year, and regardless of faith and the rites performed for a wedding ceremony one thing is constant and that is that a wedding is undoubtedly one of the most important events in a couple’s life. It is a time of fun, union and great memories that people remember for a long period of time. It is not only the couple, for whom it is an important event in life, but for all the members of both the families and friends.

Photographs from that day help us to concretize the event and all the small memories and idiosyncrasies related to it. Sometimes the day becomes a blur and a good photograph lasts forever and costs really nothing if you compare the value of the memories that it en-captures.

You should get the best photographer that meets your specific needs and style. Marriage is a special event and there are various rituals and small events that are important for the overall event. Experience is therefore vital for a wedding photographer. He/She must be at the right place at the right time. These events and the expressions of the people can never be repeated. So an experienced professional knows what to capture and how to capture the best angles, so that everyone looks brilliant.

The couple must also be comfortable with the photographer. If there is a good rapport between the couple and the photographer than some truly special images can be made. I have found that when I can get a couple at ease while doing the engagement session of the bridal portrait they let down their guard and forget that they are actually being photographed. These are my favorite photographs. Nothing is more genuine than a smile and the look a couple in love gives to one another when they are in the moment.

In my opinion a professional wedding photographer is one who not only takes excellent pictures but also develops and tells the story of the day. My goal when shooting is to develop an album with your story. You really should look for someone that can tell the cohesive story of your day regardless of their style. My specialty is photojournalistic wedding photography and I feel that my clients are looking for an unobtrusive style that tells the story from getting ready in the morning until the drive off after the reception.

An excellent professional cannot really leave out the groom and his family and friends. You have to know how to balance both the groups and in most cases I will use a second photographer who can concentrate on the groom and his family so that both angles of the story are being told. Some of my favorite images have been the quiet moments between a father and son as they get ready.

When researching a photographer you should look at their blog. Most photographers keep a blog of their most recent work and you will see if they have evolved or a change in their style. Most websites are changed periodically, but most photographers blog on regular interval of at least every couple of weeks. Their blog also allows you to see the more intimate side of your photographer and personality and how they approach photography and life in general.

If you notice I never once mentioned money in this post. I feel that there are weddings with a small budget to some where money is not even considered, but one things is common and you should research the best possible person to meet your needs.

This photo was taken before a Catholic wedding ceremony during a late September wedding at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. At each wedding I like to get a few shots behind the scene before some of the biggest moment of the day. Times such as before entering the church or as the enter the reception when being announced. I like to do this as it brings them back to a few special moments in the day and hopefully they will recall things after seeing a photograph from their point of view.

This photograph was made at a Boston Wedding at the Four Seasons across from the Boston Public Garden. In making an image I almost always try to get in right when I put my eve to the viewfinder. Sometimes there are images that are meant to be shot with a square format such as you would find on classic images made with a Hassleblad. I came across two of these images here when I was doing some design work for a studio album and thought I’d share them.

Just a quick post. I was working on some images and found this image that was made in front of a window that had to be 12 feet in height. I took a spot meter reading off the window so it would throw here in shadow and did a quick black and white conversion in Photoshop and viola! I love images with silhouettes. I always feel like ti tends to lead the viewer into the mystery of the image.

The Nonantum Resort is a wonderful venue in Kennebunkport, Maine. I arrived early and stayed late and got some wonderful shots of their grounds and the schooner arriving with the couple.

I always feel like I’m moving at 100 mph at every wedding, but I always try to get 5 minutes to sneak off so I can take a photograph of the venue where the bride and groom have their ceremony and/or reception. I think it’s important to document ”where” of their day as well as the who and why. It really help to put the setting in context in regards to telling a story through their album.

These guys were a blast. I just found this image as I was doing an edit from a great wedding I shot at the Milton Hoosic Club this past fall. Yes, they were all sober, but these guys could make a party happen in an igloo in the middle of a blizzard. Everyone at Eric and Cheryl’s wedding was amazing!

For this Boston Wedding Photographer it’s OK to shoot some details as a documentary wedding photographer. Some people may ask why I would shoot a candle or why I even would post such a pedestrian shot. The answer is simple, I like it and I think details and shots of the surroundings are essential to telling the day and moving the story along. To 99% of people this is simple a nicely lit trio of candles. To the couple this is a shot of the unity candles used in the ceremony uniting both families.

This photograph was made at Swedenborg Chapel at Harvard University and for the bride and groom it ‘s the most meaningful image of the day? I would dare say for most people it’s the group shot. Is it the most beautiful or artistic image of the day? No, but for some people the images of mom and dad with the bride, or the two brothers standing together will sometimes be the final documentation of that family before the loss of a love one. A photographer I admire very much talks about his beautiful imagery in a talk I attended and then abruptly changed direction and popped an old black and white of his family at his wedding. Not long after the wedding a fire struck the family home and destroyed all photographs that they had. The image of him with his family is the ONLY image he has left. I want to give every bride beautiful pictures, but I also want to give them something more as I will painstakingly work through formals and group shots because I remember the story of that one B&W photograph. This photograph was made at Swedenborg Chapel at Harvard University.

As a Massachusetts wedding photographer. I Like to document a wedding with a signature wide angle or photograph from the back of the church. I do this so that there is a perspective of the entire building, congregation, and wedding party, basically everyone that’s there. I also do it as I think it gives a unique perspective on the ceremony and allows the bride and groom to be in the seat of a guest watching their wedding. I will alows shoot stopped down to f/11 or so when taking these shots and in New England you can get some beautiful churches that have historical relevance to United States history.

I love shooting kids. They are WIDE open and have no fear of the camera and most of the time they are oblivious and are just enjoying life. . Hey, we all have to pick our nose sometime don’t we?

I love shadows and silhouettes. They are moody and they really allow a photographer to have some fun with interpreting a scene and how they want a photograph to develop.  In this instance the best man and his son where outside the church on the lookout for when the bride would arrive. I was watching this scene and I knew I wanted them to be in shadow and preserve some detail in the church. I waited and when the little guy turned his head to check out what was going behind him it was a simple click of the shutter. I think it wamkes the photgraph much stronger than to be looking at their backs.

This image was made at a recent wedding and though this type of shot seems ordinary to some it’s something I feel I have to shoot so that I have a complete record of the day. The bride and groom had a violinist perform at the ceremony and I wanted a shot that would convey the atmosphere of her playing without being a standard PJ shot of her. I am always looking to shoot something that seems ordinary in a different fashion without being obtrusive to the people around me.

This image was taken at about 1 PM and it was a cloudy day in new Hampshire, but right as Mitch had his mom pin his boutonniere on his lapel the sun broke through the clouds for a few moments and streamed through the door and viola! Some people hate flare, but I love it when it unexpectedly pops up.

This is one of my favorite images from this past season. It was taken during the formals after the ceremony in the church. Is this the most technically sharp and perfect photo? Nope. Would I include it in the album. Yup. When I do an edit I’ll kick out what I don’t like or what’s technically flawed, but in my rough edit I will include these types of photos because they show the true emotion of the day and a “genuine” moment that advances the story of the wedding day.

I actually changed my editing workflow after reading a book called ” Professional Wedding Photography Techniques and Image from Master Photographer” from Amherst Media. In the book Jennifer Bebb talks about their rough edit and how they are not super strict on what they keep technically if they feel the photo will advance the wedding story. After reading this I really took a second look at my editing process and the result is this type of photo being kept as a keeper. It’s not all about being pretty. To me it’s about the moment and capturing it in a photograph and telling a cohesive story of your wedding day. Weddings have the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful and it all has to be documented to tell a true story.

The Stonehill College and the Milton Hoosic Club were the sites of Julie and Pete’s wedding and reception. The Stonehill College Chapel was appropriate as Pete and Julie met as undergrads and where there romance began. The Milton Hoosic Club is a beautiful reception site and is located on the South Shore. This was my first time shooting there and I look forward to many returns! They have a wonderfully helpful staff  they really made it a special evening for the couple and all their family and friends.

I always feel privileged that people invite me into their lives on their most special day. I think we sometimes lose sight of what the day is really about as photographers. I always want to be on my “A” game for the client or the photographer who I’m second shooting for, but during the ceremony I want to push it to fourth quarter “Tom Brady two minute drill” time. I want to capture the emotions of the bride and groom and their guests during the ceremony. I am all PJ during and use long lenses so no one suspects that they’re being photographed as that would ruin the authenticity of the moment.

This image was made at a wedding a couple of weeks ago. I love getting my 14-24 out and just shooting form the hip during the reception. You get some unpredictable but great results. I’m always looking for that cool image that sets itself apart and going with the flow and having fun with my D3 really has changed the way in which I capture a wedding. This guy was circa 1985 with his break dancing moves.

Reservoir Dogs! All guys have seen “Reservoir Dogs” at least 5 times so everyone is always willing to do the “walk” especially when dressed up in a tux.

During the ceremony I like to take a long lens and hang along the sides and just record what’s happening in a photojournalistic mode. I want to record the truth as the ceremony is really what the day is about. The party is great, but it all boils down to the vows and during this time I want to record everyone and their emotions without being intrusive or having people react to my presence.

During every ceremony I like to get my wide angle lens and shoot the scene from the a unique vantage point. This old church had a choir section on the second floor and really allowed me to get a bird’s eye view of the ceremony. I like to think that this is how God is watching two souls making a vow of commitment.

Congratulations to Mitch and Kate. I shot second for Jen Lyn yesterday and I covered the “guys” for most of the day. We had a blast and I’d hang with that group any day of the week. Their a close knit bunch of guys and they really have each other’s backs. Here’s a little collage of Mitch yesterday.

Some people hate detail shots and see them as fillers to an album or slideshow. I have shot quite a few weddings this past summer as a second shooter and I shoot the details because I want people to “feel” how it was to be there. If I show 100 detail pictures of the church, flowers, cake, table settings, dress, corsages, tuxedos, and other surroundings and NOTHING else then I want the observer to tell me that he it felt like to be there even if he never saw a picture of the bride and groom. I think documenting the day in this manner as a second really adds value as the pictures and albums are meant for generations. I wish my wedding photographer had added these shots to our coverage because as the years roll along it would be a gentle reminder of that special day.

The Nonatum Resort was a wonderful location for this Maine outdoor wedding on the ocean. Big brother really took care of Jen (bride) on her big day and was there to dance with her and be there in support of both Ryan and Jen. As a father of 5 squabbling kids it’s nice to know that one day they’ll have an adult relationship and be each other’s best friend. This was wonderful wedding on a great day. Ryan and Jen really made me feel like we were I was part of the day. I wish this type of wedding day on every couple I shoot in 2009. If it does you’ll have a day to remember thirty years down the road.

Now this is the way to go! Instead of the horse and carriage or a limo they decided on arriving by Schooner which is a nice touch at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport Maine provides to weddings that take place there. Nothing like a Maine wedding, not that I’m biased being a Mainer myself.

I always keep my camera on and ready to go from the time I get out of the car until I hop back in during the wee hours of the morning to drive home. Moments like these makes it all worth it. I grabbed this shot as we left the church and the sea breeze blew Jen’s veil all around her head. She was in a moment of pure joy and this was my unexpected little bit of happiness when I got home and brought it up on my screen for editing.

Just a quick post about Jen and Brian. What a wonderful couple who love each other dearly. Brian and jen chose to get married in Maine and their wedding was absolutely gorgeous. This was a great gig for me as I’ll take any excuse to go home to Maine. I grew up in Maine and any excuse to go up there in August I’ll grab. Heck, to be paid to hang out with this couple and their family and friends was icing on the cake. This group knew how to let their hair down and party. I’d like to give a shout out to Jen at Jenifer Lynn Photography as I shot this wedding as her second. She couldn’t be a more down to earth and friendly person to work with and a great photographer to boot!

I’ll have some more images posted in the next few days as I start to go through everything I shot while down there. What a great wedding and it was a great time. I hope I get some more destination weddings as I love to travel and it really provides a unique opportunity to shoot in a strange place that can produce some stunning images.

OK. This one is pretty self explanatory. Have a little fun on the big day. I say this from the point of the photographer as I think you’re frame of mind really comes through in your images. Everyone talks about having your own style and that is what sets you apart from everyone else, but how about your fame of mind? Weddings are a joyous occasion and you may have hear the song “Electric Slide” for the past four weekends, but you need to keep in mind that the guests have not heard it in quite some time and that this is a unique and special event to them so it should be unique and special to you as well. I try to look at each couple, their families, and friends as a way to connect with people I might never have met. I think it should be easy to wake up on a Saturday morning with a smile and I’m always looking to give 110% to the client and to have some fun while doing it.

This photography was made during the full mass wedding ceremony in Providence, Rhode Island at  St Peter & Paul Cathedral when they asked the bride and groom to go around and make a show of friendship. Andrea was going from bridesmaid to bridesmaid and on the end was her flower girl and I was able to grab this with my long lens. I love the sense of motion and the colors that really accentuate the mood of the photograph.

Over the 4th I shot a wedding for a close friend who grew up with me in Maine and went to Maine Maritime with me. He was married at his home on Bailey Island in Maine. It was a great wedding with the ceremony taking place on a schooner in the harbor and the reception taking place under this huge tent on the water with lobsters galore. It was a great time and I’m glad I shot this as their wedding present. What a unique day for two special people.

Just a quick post. Llora and Trip are a couple of crazy Clemson Alums who were married in late June. This image was made at the end of the night after most of the guests had departed from the Wellesley University Alumni House. It was a quiet moment out on the back terrace and I grabbed a long lens so they wouldn’t know they were being photographed. This to me is one of the most romantic and intimate photograph of the day as they had no eyes upon them and could finally take a breath and be a married couple.

A Harvard University Wedding – Dave and Regina were married at the Swedenborg Chapel in Cambridge and then had their couple portraits taken as we walked from the church to the wedding reception site through the middle of the Harvard University campus. As a wedding photographer there was nothing more  you could have asked for. We had a couple of hours and some great locations to shoot at. They were a blast to hang with for the day. Regina was totally comfortable in front of the camera and Dave really warmed up over the day and started to have some fun. The families and friends that surrounded these two have made them a blessed couple from the get go. Dave’s Mom and dad came all the way from Hawaii and I liked the fact that he wore cool red Hawaiian shirt instead of a tux. His personality and a little bit of Dave’s background really came through. I’ll have some more over the next couple of days.
